This group is for those who are keen to gain the skills required to sail a two person 420 dinghy. Its both skilled and sociable. We will be training concurrently with the top "MAC" group but learning more fundamental skills, with a view to being invited into the top group as soon as you're ready!
With a little progress and continued attendance you will likely be invited to attend the "regional team sailing event" somewhere in the south island each March.
This March the 3 day event is in Picton, which with travel includes 19-23 March 2025. This is not compulsory but heaps of fun. It is held in the traditional schools "tournament week" , encouraged by schools nationwide.
We will learn all about "Teams Sailing" where 3 boats work together tactically, against the opposition team. Its very sociable and can be addictive! This class will also give you tons of skills suitable for Thursday night racing and Sunday races.
You will need to have skills similar to the upper level in the Tuesday "LTS 2-3" classes. There are no assistant coaches sailing with you in this group. They are busy battling out in the group above you and you will now be catching them rapidly!
Please be changed rigged and ready by 4pm each week. The 3:30 start time is a guide for how long it typically takes to get rigged and changed. Lessons continue all term, not just for 6 weeks, so there is increased value in this class, all coaches being volunteers. When conditions allow we will work in fully with the MAC team.
You can join the more advanced MAC team training as soon as you are ready: the pre-requisities are that you have all the fleet racing skills nailed: tack well, roll tack well, set sails well and quickly on every point of sail, use sail controls well to power or de-power, and have higher wind range skills.
Sunday Teams sailing races occur weekly from 1pm-430pm. See club calendar Sundays are included in your course fee and typically involve 8-10 small races, when you will often be paired with experienced sailors. Sunday is not a lesson, and is not compulsory, but you will certain learn lots nontheless. Initially, choose nice weather Sundays!
Wholeheartedly turn up for Sundays and Wednesdays for a couple fo terms and you will be amazed how far you have come.
