This 2 day course will follow on from either your previous LTS 1 course, or from limited or long-time-ago previous sailing experience. We will cover the Learn-to-Sail 2 (LTS 2) syllabus. You'll have typically developed reasonable skills by the end of this, and have a pretty good general understanding about sailing, what your safe limits are and should be able to get around the lake pretty well!
How is this relevant to larger boats or keelboat sailing? You'll be learning to sail in "dinghies" such as the RS Quest in the picture above. Dinghy sailing involves learning all about the effect of weight distribution on a boat and setting sails well. Keelboats are often more forgiving in these regards. In other words, if you do the "hard yards" in a dinghy , most would agree its a fantastic foundation for everything that might follow.
We provide bouyancy aids. Please bring sunscreen, windproof gear, towel, change of clothes, packed lunch and preferrably a wetsuit to wear underneath.
What's next?
Perhaps you will buy your own sailing dinghy or keelboat, or take advantage of our "rent a boat" scheme. You will now be able to join Wanaka Yacht Club, and if you like, hire a boat for the season to take part in (only) our safety-boat covered Thursday night and Sunday afternoon race scene. You are also welcome to hire the coach for further bespoke sailing lessons, either individually or as a group. Weekday daytimes in school term time are encouraged for this kind of additional tuition. You can make huge progress by getting involved in Thursday and Sunday races. Even if racing isn't your thing you are sure to find it is a great inexpensive way to grow your skills and meet new friends.
